Make Something from Nothing
Student-made zines from the Make Something workshops on display in the Montalbán’s reception space
Anyone who attended one of the Cinema Tuesdays evenings at Nike Sportswear’s Montalbán Theater in Hollywood this year, probably wondered what was up with crazy upstairs room covered in doodles and strung with DIY posters, t-shirts and sneakers.
The Nike’s launch of the Montalbán in August was very much tied to the release of the inspirational artist documentary Beautiful Losers. It was the first film in the Cinema Tuesdays series and Geoff McFetridge (who is featured in the film) was commissioned to deck out the roof, entire south side of the building and reception space were covered in a custom motif of his design.
Beautiful Losers director Aaron Rose conducted a series of artist workshops inspired by the film at the Montalbán (as well as venues in New York, San Francisco and Tokyo). Courses in editing, cinematography, music making, poster design, skateboard graphics, to name a few, were taught either by artists featured in the film or the filmmakers themselves. These included Rose, Money Mark, the film’s composer; Tobin Yelland, the film’s cinematographer and editor Lenny Messina.
Since the workshops had small capacity AND were only open to kids 14 to 18 years old, it is unlikely you could have attended even if you wanted to. Well we are all in luck, Nike has posted a site with videos of a bunch of the workshops that took place at the Montalbán and in New York. I still haven’t finished watching them all, but so far a favorite is Mike Mills’ poster workshop because it is not just about making a poster but also getting it out on the street and seen.
